In Jonathan's absence, here's some content to kick off the winter season. Are we having 'winter meetings' this year?. This is a self-indulgent recap of how i built the team. I'm missing the flair of Jonathan's writing, but i hope its interesting to more than just me. See ya'll on here soon.
Road to the show - The 2022 WS Champ Tigers Rebuild Recap
The Detroit Tigers put the finishing touches on a rebuild in 2021, finishing 2nd, and capped it in 2022, winning a nail biter of a Championship. I took over the helm in December 2017 for the 2018 season. The team had a bunch of bloated contracts and mediocre talent. Jose Berrios, Joey Gallo and a $45M/yr Strasburg were featured. All I remember was immediately wanting almost none of them. The only guy left on the roster from the team I took over is Ian Anderson.
The Tigers finished 2nd to the Cubs in 2021, both in the standings and in the championship round. A couple of guys from that squad that didn't make it onto the 2022 championship team: Alex Bregman, Jeff McNeil, Clayton Kershaw, and Ryan Pressly.
Fast forward to pre-season 2022 and the impenetrable Cubs were dismantled and the league contracted from 20 to 18 with a draft in January 2022. This put the Tigers as the favorites heading into the season and that proved out. More below on building the team.
Tear it all down (2018-2019)
In my first 3 months, the pre-season 2018, I got swindled by Jonathan just once and made a total of 16 trades. I traded for Jo Adell, Nolan Jones, Michael Kopech, and Dylan Cease that pre-season, who each proved a valuable chip down the line. For example, Cease was made part of the Yordan Alvarez trade in July 2021 (Alvarez for Cease / R Greene / N Jones). I won't bore you with all the trail of trades that built momentum and value, just some lists / notes below. Trades yielded mixed results, mostly good, some great and a couple bad. They mostly all led to something else.
Across 2018-2019, I also traded for: Dansby Swanson, Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, and Willy Adames and signed or drafted Will Smith (C), Alec Bohm, Jordan Montgomery, Frankie Montas, and Tarik Skubal.
In 2020, the team turned to loading up the pen and rotation while taking a few chances for stable assets by dealing a bunch of upside with risk. Trades were made for Aroldis Chapman, Raisel Iglesias, Liam Hendricks, Zach Wheeler and Joe Musgrove. On the batting side, the team traded for Ke'Bryan Hayes, Byron Buxton.
In 2021, the team pushed some more chips in, converting more from the trove of prospects and potential into real live results in the form of: Ketel Marte, Wilmer Flores, Nate Lowe, Yordan Alvarez and Shane Mcclanahan.
in 2022, the team felt much more stable and didn't need flashy trades anymore, being more selective and playing the FA market instead. The one trade of the year added Gavin Lux and Dustin May. FA or contraction draft adds included: Kyle Schwarber, Charlie Morton, Jameson Taillon, and a bunch more listed below (lots of RPs)
A few of the mishaps:
I dropped Logan Webb the week before he took off
I dropped Framber Valdez shortly before he established himself
I traded Julio Rodriguez and Shohei for Musgrove and Bregman and a 1st rounder - not bad at all, but Shohei became elite shortly after. And everyone thinks Julio will be elite immediately.
