Prospect Draft Lottery

I propose that the prospect draft lottery is weighted or have some type of odds added to it, like the NBA draft lottery, or just got back to a normal reverse standing order. Coming back to this league this year and noticed there was a lottery added to the draft. Having the worst team I've ever seen and being dead last, I just assumed I'd have the #1 pick but didn't get it with the process in place to determine the order. Even though my team finished 30-40pts lower than all the other teams in the bottom 5. Yes I still got the 2nd pick but could have just as easily gotten the 5th. Essentially any team that finishes in the bottom 5 has the same odds of getting the #1 pick based on how the order is currently determined. I feel like there needs to be something in place that gives the true worst teams in the league a better chance at getting the #1 pick. Which in turn gives them a better shot at landing a true stud that can help turn the franchise around.

I know it looks like I'm proposing this just because I didn't get the #1 pick this year, but honestly think its a benefit to the league overall. I'm near the top in two of my other dynasty leagues and finally top half in my 3rd league(which took over a similar team to this A's team), and I would definitely vote yes to a rule change like this. If you're paying money for a league knowing you have a 5yr rebuild, but then don't get the top picks because its a complete crapshoot is just another big blow. Could be part of the reason those are the teams that tend to not pay attention or be engaged, no proof on that just a thought. 

Honestly no hard feelings at all from the A's franchise and just really excited to be back in this league and actually looking forward to my massive rebuild! Just think this is something that should be discussed at a minimum. Thanks Everyone!

I didn't know how the lottery was done. but i agree with you that there should be some kind of odds in place

maybe something like this or more balls could be involve
1. worse record -10 balls
2.second worse 8 balls
3. 6 balls
4. 4 balls
5. 2 balls

We had this debate 3 years ago. Honestly I’m not sure what happened or even how it is done now but I did have some opinions at that time and I will throw it back out there.

I think there should be a end of season tournament with the bottom 4 teams to compete with each other for the #1 pick instead of a random lottery. Only the bottom 4 teams compete for those 4 spots. All spots 14th & down would just Be reverse order of standings.

There are a couple different ways you can do it. Both ways would start during the playoff with 17th v 18th and 15th v 16th playing each other in week 1 of the playoffs.

1 first way:
Winner of 17th v 18th and 15th v 16th play each other the following week to decide who gets the #1 and #2 pick and the 2 teams that lost week 1 play for the 3rd and 4th pick. Doing it this way will guarantee the worst team in the league no lower than 4th pick. Or just have the winning teams compete for the #1 & #2 picks and then reverse order so that the worse team would finish no worst than #3.

2 second way:
Winner of 17th v 18th and 15th v 16th play each other the following week as well as the 2 losing teams playing each other, except at the end of the second week you would take each teams combined record and the team with the best record during the final 2 weeks gets the #1 pick. Then just go reverse order of standings and the overall team with the worst regular season gets to pick no worse than #2.

A variation of 3 would be if we have 3 playoff weeks, all 4 teams could play each other a different week and still take the over all record for those 3 weeks.

In all of these scenarios if a game was ever tied it would go to the lower seeded team. There are many ways we could do a tournament to make it fair for all. I hope I explained those ok.

Looking at last years standings besides the A’s (which has a better owner know) the other bottom 3 teams were within 13 games of each other so this could work and be fair.

I prefer the idea of an end of the season tournament to select the top draft picks.  It will give incentive to avoid tanking and give some teams something to play for.

I also like the idea of an end of season tournament for the top pick. This will keep teams engaged who might not otherwise be as active, and makes the trade deadline decision time. Who to hold onto for that tournament, and who to move for long term pieces.

The one thing we will need to watch is the teams in 14-15th places “forgetting” to set their lineup down the stretch to slide back a couple of spots and get a shot at that first pick.

I agree with Andrew  
Why should a team that's really bad  not have a chance at first pick
i think going with a larger amount of balls in lottery  should be the way to go.

I also think every team need to field  major league players on fantrax. That's something we should talk about in another post

A tournament could reshape draft picks. Maybe the winner of the tournament will be guaranteed no worse than a 2nd pick and other guaranteed slots. That way there is a hybrid approach for incentives and not punishing teams needing help.

Maybe teams 11-14 and Teams 15-18 will be bracketed. The winner of bracket 11-14 will win no. 5 pick. The winner of 15-18 will be guaranteed at least a no. 2. Then randomize both groups for slots. So, any team 15-18 will have chance at no 1 pick, but winner of bracket does no worse than pick 2.
