FA in playoffs discussion

This is in regards to teams NOT making the playoffs and Free Agency...

I thought about having a poll on this one but feel it would be too bias with the number of teams at 14 who do not make the playoffs. I will more than likely make this a rule but am opening it to discussion to iron out any wrinkles you think may result because of this...

Teams who do not make the playoffs will not be allowed to participate in Free Agency once the playoffs begin since their season essentially ends once the playoffs start...

However, teams that are in the playoffs will only be able to sign the players they pick up for that year and these players WILL NOT be eligible to be tagged and kept for the following year, they will become free agents. Essentially only used for the playoffs. Once you are eliminated from the playoffs you will also NOT be able to participate in free agency...

I did think about allowing team not in the playoffs to still be able to pick up minor leagues but Sept. call ups could cause this to be an issue. With teams in playoffs not being able to keep whom they pick up the following year then it is not as important to allow teams not in playoffs to pick up minor league guys anyway....

The playoffs are a 3 week stretch that are about one thing and one thing only, winning and the teams that are in them. It only makes sense that only the playoff teams should be allowed to participate in FA during this time as no body else is playing...

Go ahead keep helping to good teams that make the playoffs and punish the teams that don't. Sorry, this will hurt this league IMO

May I ask how it will hurt the league?

Also you do realize that I said players picked up by the playoff teams are not allowed to be kept beyond that year?

Am I punishing the good teams by not allowing them to trade beyond the deadline and allowing the non playoff teams to trade? You were for that with no mention of punishment since I am not allowing the playoff teams to get better by trading...

and I do think Punish is the wrong word here....

That doesn't make any sense, why would you want to block the teams in the playoffs from getting players?  No player added during the playoffs can be kept in the next season, they will all be free agents.  I don't see how that is an advantage?  No one is getting the player past the playoff period, it helps no one long term.  People will have had what?  23 weeks to improve their teams, I don't think 3 weeks is going to hurt anyone's build efforts.

How about you play with what got you there. FA signing ends when the playoffs begin.

Have no problem with Cubs suggestion and that any signing of players, they cannot be kept. Keep it simple for everyone.

I have to agree here with KC. Does not hurt anyone that FA signing ends when Playoffs start.

I feel like when the playoffs start, that's when a lot of the late season call ups may have an impact for teams that aren't in contention in the MLB so playoff teams will be able to pick up possible sleepers/impact young guys that non playoff teams need to keep their eye on. Obviously they can't keep them past this year but finding diamonds in the rough is better this time of year than next year after everyone knows about them and when non playoff teams could have them under contract for a while by catching it early. Instead of being diligent and finding possible studs, they are stuck battling in the offseason once free agency opens. I don't really care either way, just a different take.

I was going to say this as well. If a smart player who isn't in the playoffs suspected a late season breakout of a call up or anyone for that matter, instead of being able sign them for a small contract while they are under the radar, they will have to pay up a lot more money to sign that player in the postseason. Overall, I don't hate the rule, I just don't find it at all necessary. What benefit does this rule even have? Just seems like an arbitrary rule made for the sake of adding a rule.

Agreed. I feel like the time the playoff teams are battling should be the time the diligent owners should be able to keep and eye on September call ups and get their teams somewhat in order for the offseason, otherwise there isn't much to pay attention to until the draft if you aren't a playoff team.

Well  you can always pick up whatever player you suspect of being good before the playoffs start tbh. The draft is in 3 weeks and before the playoffs. It will cause no difference in how much you pay or do not pay. Also you guys will be trading while the playoff teams can not trade which will help you build your team. 

Teams not in the playoffs, thier season ends and they no longer are competing so with your season over there is no reason to be picking up MLB players... That is for the teams that are competing and with teams not being able to keep the players they pick up, then no one loses out on anything...

Like I said, I don't think it's a huge deal either way, I just know a lot of young guys get called up late in the season due to rosters expanding or just to see what they have on plummeting teams and some guys take full advantage of that, but it may not happen until our playoffs have started. Those types of guys are way more important to a rebuilding team than a playoff team. It's more so the fact of staying attentive throughout the entire season and getting a steal while others are napping instead of having a playoff team pick them up for a couple of weeks, and then everyone jumping on them during free agency in the offseason. Obviously the non-playoff teams season is over, but if everyone is a baseball fan like I am, you notice guys getting called up that are hot to finish the season and if you can get them on your squad, I think that's a chance most teams would take if rebuilding.

Well I looked and the last two dates for FA before the playoffs off start are

August 31st

and

September 7th

Not to say that players will not be called up after that, but there is still 1 FA after the rosters expand...

I figured there would still be free agent dates before playoffs, but getting those couple weeks of stats to see if a guy is for real helps. A one or two week stretch doesn't mean he's going to be roster worthy. Like I said, I don't think it matters much either way, just throwing out a different angle on it.

I find it incredibly bizarre that this would come up in July. We shouldn't have rule changes in mid-season unless something insane happens (a la Marshall University).

Leave the rule the same for 2017 and let's discuss it in the winter meetings.

I disagree, sometimes you do not think of things till they are coming. You can not think of everything at the start. I do not get the incredibly bizzare comment but this will be changing this year.

Why free agency? I could understand trades not being allowed to be made, but everyone should be able to sign free agents at all times. Real life allows it, so why not for fantasy purposes as well? I would want the league to stay active all the way through the end of the season. Not allowing 14 teams to make any moves after playoffs start makes it a lot less active of a league.

Teams not in the playoffs are still allowed to trade if you are worried about activity, well not in playoffs. Playoffs are about playoffs though,,, When a team bids on a dude they do not need and a playoff team loses out it is a bit frustrating. It is only a 3 week period and not a big deal. There will be no new players coming into the MLB until the next draft so nothing will be missed out on. Teams in the playoffs will only be able to pick up the player on a one year deal
