Since we have some new owners, and it never hurts to brush up... I think now would be a good time to make sure we are all on same page with how the RFA process works.... The rules are in section F of "Consolidated Rules(LINK)," but here is the actual rule below... So if anyone has any questions no matter how small ask away and we can have a smooth RFA process! Thanks
Also remember the new rule changes
1.RFA players WILL NOT be eligible for the retirement rule...
2.MLB Players - For contracts the lowest any single year salary can be is 30% of the AAS, and the highest any single year can be is 30% of the AAS
SECTION F - RESTRICTED FA
Each season a GM may designate no more than 2 players as "Restricted", making those players Restricted Free Agents ("RFAs"). These players must be publicly announced on the proboards site on or before the deadline established by the League Office. Please note that FAILURE to publicly declare said players as "Restricted" shall forfeit the right of that GM to restrict ANY players for that season. Any and all unrestricted Free Agents shall be subject to regular (unrestricted) FA bidding. Once a GM properly designates the (no more than) 2 Restricted players, those players will be eligible for Restricted free agency bidding.
(F1)RESTRICTED PLAYER BIDDING CRITERIA:
Restricting a player provides a semi protective measure to help a GM retain that player, while not assuring that GM will retain said player. The Average Annual Salary ("AAS") that a GM bids will require a certain minimum number of years that offer must cover to be a valid bid. The HIGHER the AAS, the LONGER the MINIMUM contract term you MUST offer in order to make a valid bid. The MINIMUM contract term is based solely on the offer's AAS, and is determined as follows:
AAS = up to $3M, then MINIMUM 1 yr deal
AAS = $3M+ to $6M, then MINIMUM 2 yr deal (total min contract = $6,000,001 to $12M)
AAS = $6.1M+ to $9M, then MINIMUM 3 yr deal (total min contract = $18,000,001 to $27M)
AAS = $9.1M+ to $12M, then MINIMUM 4 yr deal (total min contract = $36,000,001 to $48M)
AAS = $12.1M+ to $15M, then MINIMUM 5 yr deal (etc)
AAS = $15.1M+ to $18M, then MINIMUM 6 yr deal (etc)
AAS = $18.1M and up then MINIMUM 7 yr deal (etc)
Simply, you can divide the AAS by 3M, then round UP to determine the MINIMUM number of years the contract must cover. Any bid not meeting the correct minimum term offered will be voided. The bidder can always make a contract term LONGER than the minimum number of years since the AAS only determines the MINIMUM term.
(F2) BID MATCHING PROTOCOL:
Since the bidding is for a Restricted free agent, the GM who originally owned the RFA has 72 hours to match the winning bid, and may restructure that bid for a total contract amount no less and a term no longer than that of the "winning" bid. If the restricting GM chooses not to match the offer, then the winning bidder is obligated to sign the player to the exact terms of the winning bid - there is NO option to remove or reneg on any bid placed. The 72 hour acceptance "clock" will commence with the winning bid being posted of the last player of the RFA batch by the League Office. Whether you match or pass, it must be posted as a reply to the winning bid for the player in question. If you match, please clearly indicate that you accept the exact terms and breakdown of the winning bid or indicate any allowed changes you make to that bid pursuant to this Rule and back end loading guidelines.
(F3) COMPENSATION PICKS
Compensation picks will be awarded for RFA bids based on AAS. All compensation picks will be awarded as supplemental picks between rounds of the minor league draft.
AAS <= 8M - no compensation
AAS = $8M to < $12M - 2nd round supplemental pick (after 2nd round)
AAS = $12M or more - 1st round supplemental pick (after 1st round)
Ordering of the supplemental picks will be based on the AAS of the player signed. The team signing the RFA will not forfeit any picks as a result of the signing. These compensation picks will be trade-able.
FINAL RFA BID COMMENTS
A team may bid on their own RFA. In the event no bids are received on a RFA, that player will immediately become an unrestricted free agent
