Hopefully none of this will matter...
I have thought about everything everyone has said and the biggest problem I see is there is a lot of nuance between points A and B to try and untangle. So I have come up with a plan that I feel is best for the whole league. Now hopefully we will have some sort of season and none of this will matter. I wanted the league to have some semblance of what is going on though so we could have it in the back of our head when conducting team business in the present. While some of what is being written seems to be comparing contending teams to building teams as a lot in the thread was about that. I do not think it is as simple as setting up 2 camps of how we are effected in a competition sense only.
As far as benefiting the teams that are competing I would disagree. We do not get an extra shot as we are built to compete right now and we are losing that shot all while our players get older. So this virus hitting, if anything is an advantage to building teams. Every team has been delayed in someway by what is going on. Bulding teams have an advantage right now as they can play catch up while the teams competing just sit on their thumbs. So we do not gain a year, we just do not lose a year with a blanket rollover.
However teams should have the choice to roll over the contract or not. This way if they had an older player that they signed or traded for due to a specific year the contract ended then they do not risk being stuck with him an extra year. At the end of the day all of our players, if no season, will have gotten a year older and we all have contracts of varying lenghts in this league no matter the age of the player now.
Choosing a specific number of players that each team could carry over would also not work as there are too many variables. If we were to do just 5 for instance then that would suit some teams better than others. The teams that have more players on prospect contracts would be better off as those contracts are not effected where as a team with more show contracts would be effected more. Just another reason why this is an advantage to building teams who tend to have more players in their first 3 yrs. Our minimum rule is basically a get out of jail free card as they do not have to worry about losing a year of service time as those with more show contracts do. Your prospect player may get older but his contract stays the same while show contract guys get older and they lose a yr. All teams whether building or not have many different combinations of how many they have of each. So who knows what number is fair. Another advantage when it comes to these prospect contracts is even if there is a season, it is short, and unless we change minimums, players have a better chance of getting an extra yr anyway. By the way no I do not think that should change.
Owed money I think I see differenty. One of many advantages building teams have right now over competing teams is that they can just build. They have "extra" time, as mentioned, to build towards their goal while competing teams sit. In fact if a building team were smart right now would be the perfect time to try and pick away and take advantage of the contenders boredom. Anyway, taking on contracts as dumps and trying to clear money is part of that building process. As this virus has not inhibited the building process then I see no reason too inhibit that process by saying that money owed should roll over also. It should not.
As far as teams who get to keep the 2020 salary of their players on prospect tag contracts having an advantage I would disagree. It was said because building teams would have to wait longer to possibly get their hands on them. We have all had to wait a year. building or competing. If that '20 yr were just cut then the building teams or whomever is waiting for those players to hit FA would not be affected in any way, the timeline remains normal for them. However the teams with those players would waste half a PT and lose something in that scenario. They also lose the chance to trade said player while he has two yrs on his contract and now he has one year which changes the value. Of course that team could trade him this year but with none of us knowing what is going on you can not fault a team for not being able to plan properly in uncertainty. Not matter what we do to help teams between points A and B other teams will be hurt. Another reason why a blanket roll over is the best option that treats everyone the same.
I do not agree that this only effects players on 1 yr contracts. Some teams, I would imagine a lot, build their teams around staggering their contracts as the Nats stated, how long a contract to offer a player, who to trade away and trade for as to best have your tags laid out for the future. If we brought forward only one yr contracts then this could create a log jam that would domino and change a lot down the line and mess with our decisions in the past. Again Nats more or less mentioned this valid point. If we go choosing a set number of players you can roll over with this contract or that contract, then we enter mirky waters, doing this would beneift some more than others and hurt some more than others. Another reason why blanket roll over is the way to go BUT with team options to decline.
Now while I say I disagree, just chalk that up to bad wording on my part as I do not want to come across as if I am saying anyone is wrong or right as it was said by several that there is no right or wrong answer as we are in uncharted waters and I thouroghly respect everyones opinion and very much appreciate the feedback. It was also said the best way is to keep it simple. That is very much the truth. The only real way to do that is to go down road A or B and not deviate. Anywhere in the middle is full of nuance, different perspectives and managerial styles of different situations that would be impossible to navigate and make fair for everyone at the same time. Road A is not fair to anyone and means sacrifice for everyone some more than others and why sacrifice when you do not have too. So I really see no other option to go down except Road B which treats everyone the same.
Blanket coverage.
Thank you everyone for listening. My explanation was not simple and I apoligize for the length but I wanted to try and hit all the points mentioned properly and respectufully. I am sure there are also counterpoints, which proves the point that there are just too many variables as everyones points were valid. The loose outline for the plan will be much more simple. I say loose as there might be some minor things I am not seeing atm, but this is the jist of what will be done... If you have any quesions or criticisms feel free to let me have it.... Thank you
As the Indians said someting that can be explained simply in two lines, so here it goes
If there is no 2020 season then you will have the option to roll over or not roll over a show contract. Owed money in '20 will be forgiven and not carried over. Also think teams with extra tags this year should be able to carry them over to next year, same max.
Bam, 2 lines, for now
